The Valdejetas Chestnut Grove

A secret forest in Cordoba

The Valdejetas Chestnut Grove

The secret forest of Córdoba’s autumn

When summer fades and the first rains turn the Sierra Morena golden, a magical corner awakens among hills and streams: the Castañar de Valdejetas, one of the most beautiful autumn landscapes in the province of Córdoba. Located just a few kilometers from Santa María de Trassierra, this grove of centuries-old chestnut trees offers a natural spectacle hard to imagine so close to the city.

A forest with soul

The Castañar de Valdejetas is surprising in its uniqueness. Chestnut trees are not typical of Córdoba’s landscape, dominated by holm oaks and cork oaks, but here—thanks to the area’s humid microclimate and altitude—they have thrived for centuries. Their twisted trunks and dense shade create a fairytale atmosphere, where silence is broken only by the crunch of dry leaves and birdsong.

In October and November, the forest is covered in golden, reddish, and brown tones, while chestnut burrs carpet the ground, creating an autumn postcard unlike any other in Andalusia.

Route from Santa María de Trassierra

The most common access begins in Santa María de Trassierra, about 15 km from Córdoba. From the village center, take the CO-3402 road toward Villaviciosa de Córdoba, and after about 5 km you’ll find the rural path leading to the chestnut grove.

Where to park: It’s recommended to leave the car in Santa María de Trassierra, near the square or civic center, and continue on foot. The rural tracks toward the grove are narrow and cross private land.

Distance: The most popular circular route is between 12 and 14 km, with about 500 m of elevation gain.

Duration: 3 to 4 hours, depending on pace.

Difficulty: Medium-low — ideal for casual hikers or families used to walking.

Along the route you’ll pass beautiful spots such as Puerto Artafi, a natural viewpoint offering spectacular views of the valley and the hills surrounding Trassierra. From there, the path descends into the heart of the chestnut grove, where the air becomes fresh, humid, and silent.

A walk for the senses

The Castañar de Valdejetas is not just a place to hike, but to pause and breathe. Photography lovers will find dreamlike scenes: leaf-covered paths, sun beams filtering through the branches, and color contrasts that look painted.

In autumn the area comes alive: families collecting chestnuts, school field trips, and hikers seeking a natural refuge away from the city noise. Even so, its discreet location keeps it a well-kept secret among locals.

Useful tips

  • Wear hiking or mountain shoes — the ground can be damp.

  • Don’t pick chestnuts except in permitted areas, as part of the forest belongs to private estates.

  • Respect nature: leave no waste and close any gates you pass through.

  • If visiting with children, avoid touching chestnut burrs, as they are sharp.

  • Best time of day: early morning or sunset, when sunlight filters through the grove and creates a magical atmosphere.

The soul of Córdoba’s autumn

The Castañar de Valdejetas is a natural gem that showcases the diversity of landscapes in the province of Córdoba. Surrounded by holm oaks and cork oaks rises this humid forest, almost otherworldly, where time seems to slow.

Visiting it is an invitation to return to the essentials: to enjoy the sound of leaves, the smell of damp earth, and the touch of cool air. A place that doesn’t need monuments to enchant—its greatest beauty lies in the simplicity of nature.
